When I was in Japan working on my book, I was always worried about upsetting someone by asking them to relive their experience of the 2011 tsunami for my benefit. What I found instead were people more concerned about the memory of that horrific event being forgotten. Today is the 12th anniversary #tsunami #tohoku

One year journey from busted collar bone back to the ice rink.

I didn’t intend to but I ended up writing (most of) a book about climate adaptation that focuses on farmers, growers and ranchers from all over the world. So, for this #nationalfarmersday I thought I’d share a few shots of the farmers and farms that have helped me understand what it is to #feedtheworld in a time of #climatechange.

It’s been exactly one year since @erickson_emily1 made one of the most questionable decisions in recent history and married my ass. Not sure how I managed to reel her in but I’m sure glad she took the bait. I hope our next year together lasts twice as long as the last one

Glad to have stumbled into this sake bar perched over a breezy street in #Sendai. The vibe was good, the sashimi was like butter and the nihonshu kept coming. Temples, shrines, memorials and monuments. Part of my reporting here concerns the triple disasters of 2011 (earthquake, tsunami, nuclear meltdown), which killed more than 20,000 people, and have spent a few days traveling the coast with an anthropologist who specializes in death. I’ve studied the events for years and talked to many survivors. There’s just no way to wrap your head around something like this, but the shear abundance of these markers gives a sense, at least, of its scope. #japantravel #reportage #onassignment

I’ve been in Japan for three weeks now. After having some fun on the front end, I’ve been deep into the work and haven’t had the time or energy to post as much as I’d hoped. Field work often goes like that. Up at dawn (which for me is like getting kicked in the shin), and then days full of interviews and moving around. Japan has been a challenging place to work, especially up north and especially amid a pandemic. I might have underestimated how significant the language and cultural barriers would be. Still, I’m plugging away, following stories of climate, disaster, food and people. A week or so ago, I came across this fisherman trying to navigate a field of concrete tetrapods, and I felt like I could relate. #japan #onassignment @island_press #climatechange #agriculture

What better way to get to know a place than to learn how they cook? In Kyoto, we found a private cooking class in the chef’s home. Sure, Taro taught us how to make dashi, omelets and wagyu beef, but he also shared a wealth of cultural knowledge in exchange for clarifications on the pesky nuances of English. In my next lifetime I’ll write cookbooks. #kyoto #cookingathome #cooking #japanculture
