The last ten years with this amazing woman have been a gift. A person can stand in the pungent spray of the sagebrush sea and look over an entire universe that rarely rises higher than their elbow. Perhaps that’s why it’s been so overlooked.

“People hate hogs. But they love their guns and they love having something to shoot.” Anthony DeNicola is an ecologist who specializes in the unseemly underbelly of wildlife management. Last January, I toured the South with him to learn about his plan to eradicate wild pigs, America’s most destructive invasive species. Along the way, I saw how farmers are at their wit’s end, how sport hunting has made the problem worse, and how, these days, there are no simple solutions.

I’m no hardcore backcountry skier but I still think the 10th Mountain Hut system is one of the coolest resources Colorado has to offer. This year we got lucky when @h_sackett landed a coveted reservation at the McNamara hut near Aspen. If you don’t mind suffering through the climb and sleeping at 10,360 feet, all you have to do is drink whiskey and watch the birds. @10thmtnhuts
