The idea seeks to address two significant problems facing the country. On the one hand, the overwhelming scientific consensus warns of an impending climate catastrophe for which we are woefully unprepared. On the other, the country’s bridges and roads are, in fact, crumbling.

“Our misery is the work of man.” — Words from a survivor of the Johnstown Flood of 1889. May 31 marks the anniversary of this egregious example of capitalist negligence and greed-fueled tragedy, which served as early inspiration for my upcoming book, “Over the Seawall.”
Around the world, people are building levees, shoring up dams, digging canals and constructing infrastructure to confront the impacts of climate change. Most of these investments will likely save countless lives and protect property, but some will inadvertently add to the problems they are trying to address. This issue, called maladaptation, is at the heart of my book, “Over the Seawall,” which is coming out later this year. I also wrote about it for a recent print edition of @discover.magazine

When I was in Japan working on my book, I was always worried about upsetting someone by asking them to relive their experience of the 2011 tsunami for my benefit. What I found instead were people more concerned about the memory of that horrific event being forgotten. Today is the 12th anniversary #tsunami #tohoku
One year journey from busted collar bone back to the ice rink.
I didn’t intend to but I ended up writing (most of) a book about climate adaptation that focuses on farmers, growers and ranchers from all over the world. So, for this #nationalfarmersday I thought I’d share a few shots of the farmers and farms that have helped me understand what it is to #feedtheworld in a time of #climatechange.
It’s been exactly one year since @erickson_emily1 made one of the most questionable decisions in recent history and married my ass. Not sure how I managed to reel her in but I’m sure glad she took the bait. I hope our next year together lasts twice as long as the last one
